The black finish seems to be original on the clock to the right. The other clocks have small remains of black finish. Probably all Kieninger & Obergfell 8-day ship clocks were black painted when delivered.

I do not think so. In my opinion they never have been painted in the factory and delivered later. They were painted on board by crew members. Lots of these clocks were painted black but that was not the only common used colour. Lots of them also were painted beige.

This is very interesting information! It would be grand if you could share a picture of such a beige clock, I've never seen one so far.

7008 N is a good example. Quite logical as most of the engine rooms and almost all internal tubes, electronic devices and even clocks - especially on u-boats - were painted beige with thick "Bootslack".
