    Comments On This Para Badge

    Hi,

I am thinking about buying this FJ Badge from Peter Whammond, any comments on the badge and the repair (which he openly describes as possibly post war).

    Thanks

    Mark,

The hinge and catch are very close to Osang type hardware. I am not an expert on unmarked badges though. It is close to some marked Osang pictures I have but not exact.

Peter is a good guy, I have gotten a few nice things from him before.

      Alan,

Thanks, I trust Peter having dealt with him over the last 12 years, I just wanted some feedback from the FJ experts on what they think, particularly on the repair. I simply cannot afford to pay $7-900 for a badge and this seems a good compromise. I am sure people will tell me that $425 is a lot for a repaired badge but I have not seen a Para badge under $675.

      Cheers

      Mark

            Dear Mark,

It is a later war badge by Juncker. It seems that the eagle might even be made of Tombak or possibly Cupal.

Regarding the price, you have to be careful not to compare apples with oranges here. While most para badges are far more expensive, the majority you see is made of Buntmetall, which commands a higher price. The example you show is still ok priced for a slightly manipulated zinc badge, but it is not a bargain.

These later war Juncker badges are rarely marked and have two different kinds of catchplates. Here is the same kind of badge with another Juncker-typical catchplate. The eagle and wreath design match Juncker badges as well.

                Para Badge

                Hi Mark,
The badge is real, but I do agree with Frank. I don't think that the badge is that great of a deal for the money. Plus, many would not want a badge with a altered or replaced rivet. This is important to keep in mind if you ever decide to sell it. When ever I buy anything I always ask myself, if I buy it could I sell it or would I be stuck with it? This is something to keep in mind when buying items in the $300+ range. My two cents.
                Regards,
                Jody

                  Frank and Jody,

Thanks for your wise words, I agree with all you say, but this is the 3rd cheapest badge I have seen in two years Bill Shea had the others one was very nicely struck but completely absent of any remaing finish $350 as I recall the other he had was missing its bottom catch $275. As you say you have to live with what you buy.

                  Cheers

                  Mark
