Hey guys...

I am going to "assume" this is fake...but figured I would ask anyway.

Selling is asking around $2000...if original, is it worth it?

A sentiment which I (largely) agree with, but not very helpful in terms of answering the initial enquiry.

Just for the record, elements which betray it's origin:-

1. The eagle is a fake; of the wrong design (for an issue cap) and poorly attached;
2. The manner of affixing the winged-wreath is similarly incorrect;
3. The chin strap is of the 'continental' pattern and not correct for an EM's cap (although photographic evidence would suggest that officers did, in fact, attach their chincords to these caps, which was obviously a matter of personal preference);
4. Finally, the cap shows signs of 'artificial' age, ie. the way in which it has been marked would not be consistent with normal wear and tear when worn during active service nor, for that matter, is it consistent with normal storage deterioration.

I always think these types of questions should be answered with reasons. This may influence fakers to 'up-skill', but I doubt it. When you know what to look for, then you know what you are looking at.

Actually many early "Meyer" hats did have tunic breast eagles applied to them.

I stand corrected.

Although I am uncertain as to the overall percentage which would have been so decorated, I am certain that none would have had the 'eagle' affixed which is depicted in the cap under discussion.
