IJA Hospital Photos: Female Uniforms, Interesting Swords

Picked up a group of photos from an Army hospital and wanted to share a few with you.


General with a wounded hand.
Officers up front have a variety of swords; shin-gunto, a kyu-gunto, one in civilian mounts.
Second row on the far left is a policeman. 3rd man appears to be a civilian employee.


Hospital staff including nurses. Many of the nurses in the top photo appear to be wearing the Red Cross medal, the nurse on the left appears to have a few medals. some of the nurses and staff have an oval Red Cross badge.
In the lower photo, nurses in white uniforms, and the men with their armbands.

The officer with the injured hand is a Colonel yeh? 4 yellow strips and 3 stars on the insignia?
I really like the nurse photos. I really want to get ahold of a photo of nurses in the Pacific that wore semi-combat uniform with leggings and everything. I saw one picture either on this site or Axis History Forums once, and I've been trying to look for an original photo like that since.

You're right about the rank. It looked like it was yellow under the stars, but with my glass I can see the middle red stripe there.

I once saw a set of yosegaki (signed flags) presented to a nurse who was stationed on Truk.

I think Japanese military medical items are way underated. Photos are so important when they include details regarding equipment, insignia, uniforms, insignias etc. Great photos & thanks for posting them

Great photos and close ups! I agree that photos are very important when getting detailed and correct information regarding how things were worn etc. I find my self with a magnifying glass all the time looking over period photos. Thanks for sharing.

Photo taken at Port Arthur (Today called Lushunkou) with a Russo-Japanese war monument.

Correct date! The ship is the "Dai Hoku Maru" Hospital ship.

I'm guessing at the last kanji for member: 員 --it's too hard for me to read ... but makes sense. The writer is using an old-style kanji for north. 业 > 北
