WWI German U-boat Badge - REAL ?? -

I picked this up for $10.00. What intrigues me is that the highlites of the crown are fire gilded as was the hull (which is rubbed down almost to the tombak/brass/or buntmetal base metal) and both the latterally running "sticks" on the deck. Fire gilding has not been used since the 1940's so is it possible that this cheap looking badge could be real?

Looks like a nice S&L to me. Their catalog lists it as hollow.
