    Gunto Type 94 ?

    Hi,

Can you say me if this gunto looks good ?
What does mean kanji on the blade ?

    What is its value ?

    Thanks for help.

sorry, seems a Chinese fake. The wood grain is too loud, poor tang work.

doesn't look good. handle wrap is wrong, fittings incorrect. blade with the damascus pattern is a dead giveaway...

The posts above say most of it already, but just a few easy tips for beginners.

Japanese swords do sometimes have some small decoration on the blade (I'm talking about the actual blade here, not the tang/part covered by the handle where it's common to find some marking), but this is pretty rare, especially on military gunto. Chinese fakers tend to over do things and love adding kanji, dragons and all kinds of crap on there.

The grain, as pointed out above, does not look like that on a real Japanese made sword. It may indeed be folded steel, but not done the traditional way.

That shade of green paint on the scabbard is very common on Chinese fakes. It must be Chinese army surplus green spray paint or something.

I don't think it is but with those pictures it's difficult to tell.

Both the swords you show, in their authentic forms, are periodically available on the Estand. If I were you I'd wait for one there if you don't have a good background in swords.

                Regards,
                Stu

                  Hi Stu,

                  You don't think it's a good Type 95 ?
It looks good to me... I know pictures are not great, but serial number is correctly stamp, the handle is made of copper.

I've found these links too :
                  http://www.naturabuy.fr/Katana-sous-...em-753529.html
                  This late Type 95 ?

                  This one is a fake.

Thanks for your answer gunto. What's wrong with it ?
I've notice only one detail, the inspection stamp in the middle is usually less bigger.

I believed the second link as a real type 94.

About the "late type 95" it's another fake, I didn't know fakers even copy the wooden handle. But when you look good don't you recognize the green shade of the chineese army stock paint?

A word on the seller Alanic1143, he is the worst liar I have ever see. All this crap are listed as original but are junk factory fresh out, he his raping the money out of unaware collector for years. Have managed to get it ban, but nobody care. He must no be unexperienced himself reading the voc he uses. So that guy is allowed to crook people online again and again ... I wish to be able to just ignore/don't care but I found that behaviour revolting.

Or maybe I'm the silly one, not making money on people weakness.
                          My two cents,
                          Best regards.

P.S: You have pointed out what's the matter (I mean, one of them) by yourself, keep learning you are close to make the difference by yourself.

                            Thanks for your answer staldion.

So I'm right with the size of the middle stamp ? What's the other detail ?
Still yesterday I belivied this Type 95 was good !

So I only search a WW2 gunto to display a Type 90 helmet, I think I'll stay in my speciality : COMBAT HELMETS

Quick read to easily spot fake gunto:

                              http://swordsworld.modelers-paradise...swordsebay.pdf

                              Detailled view of textbook NCO:

                              http://www.h4.dion.ne.jp/~t-ohmura/gunto_073.htm

(Check out the other pages, a lot of info and lovely pictures.)

Other details are (to me) the middle stamp, the suspicious characters of the digit number, the fact that the paint have been completly removed so you cant point fresh paint, king of burn scabbard to make it look like a relic .. Amateur work.
