    D-Day attributables

These are some original items in my collection that have a known D-Day connection.

    *Rupert Paradummy

*A2 Jacket belonging to R.L. Jackson of the 452nd Bomb Group, 731st Bomber Squadron. They flew three D-Day missions, one over Caen, two over Argentan. He flew two of those missions and has a "D" painted inside two of the bombs painted on his jacket.

*Ike jacket and picture of Sgt. Charles Wilson of the 442nd Troop Carrier Group. The 442nd TCG flew some of the first missions during the invasion of the Continent, dropping paratroops near SteMere-Eglise on 6 Jun 1944 and flying a resupply mission on 7 Jun, being awarded a DUC for its part in the Normandy invasion.

    *Complete Waco Glider Instrument Panel

*A piece of parachute picked up in St. Mere Eglise around June 8th by Cpl. Edward Mullet of the 315th Combat Engineers.

*An FFI (Free French/French Resistance) pennant, armband, and Pin.

*An M1 Helmet with painted insignia of the 5th or 6th Engineer Special Brigade who entered Normandy on Omaha Beach.

Hope you enjoy them. Please post your attributables. -Ron

            WOW! Thanks!
I live in the Market Garden area, so gliders always had my special interest.
            Love this panel! I'm jealous

I resurfaced this thread today for obvious reasons. A few more items in the collection with D-Day ties. First is the uniform, dog tags, canteen/belt of Douglas H. Gillette who served with the 116th Infantry Regiment of the 29th Infantry Division. The 116th saw hell on D-Day on Omaha beach and Gillette was a part of that. The other historical aspect of Douglas Gillette is that before the war he was a professional baseball player and while training for D-Day in England, he skippered and also pitched for the 116th Infantry Regiment Yankees. It turns out that Gillette pitched and won the final game of the 1943 ETO World Series defeating Fighter Command and making the 116th IR Yankees ETO World Series Champions. In the background is an original FFI camp flag.

Next is the A-2 of the 534th Bomb Squadron Commander Major Douglas L. Winter. He flew with the 532nd on D-Day bombing defensive installations along the Normandy coast.

Lastly, for now, is a rare document that may not be specifically for D-Day but I feel is appropriate. It is a document to a member of the French Resistance, Georgette Vancoeille, from General Eisenhower and the US Government expressing appreciation for assisting the escape of allied soldiers shot down in France. It is printed on thick parchment, has the European Theater of Operations embossed seal, and has a unique watermark in the parchment of the National Seal of the United States with the French Resistance "Cross of Lorraine" symbol above it.

Thanks Mike/Phil. Phil, the first pic is the ESB when I found it, second is after some tedious overpaint removal. Mike, where did you acquire your Rupert, and can you show a pic of it?

                          Hi Ron,

I got mine about seven years ago. It was one of those airfield finds in the UK you hear about.

                              My other D-Day attributed helmet.

This was souvenir'd from a bunker just in from Utah Beach on D-Day. Used as a candle holder...
