    Interesting rare bird!

    ...

Came across this period photo on Ebay, fixed on a Heer Schirmmütze. IMO a foreign made example?

Looks like a parrot to me. Maybe it belonged to a captain of a Nazi pirate ship. Jacques

It looks very similar to this one in my collection which I believe to have been made in Belgium or Holland. The wreath and cockade is embroidered directly to the band. Can we see the whole pic?

Thanks for posting that. Judging by his breast eagle, I'd say his entire uniform was made outside the Reich...

This photo was for sale about six months ago on Ebay.
Here is probably this same photo for sale again from another seller :

Sometime ago there was a similar eagle discussed here on the forum. There were quite a few views that is was Italian made? Breast eagle is different as well. The awards indicate to me the pic was taken early in the war. Jacques

I've heard the Italian theory as well, and there are similarities in the construction of the bullion, but there is also quite a likeness to the Flemish made SS officer's sleeve eagles (see below). I'm also pretty sure that the body of my cap is Dutch or perhaps Belgian wool, lending further credence to the Low Countries origin theory...

                        What an odd photo.

Everything looks 'touched up' to me.

The cap is about 5 sizes too big ................. for a start.

The shoulder straps have a black base too.

That may just be shadow or period touch up to make things stand out better.

I love all the insignia posted in photos and current, I go with the Belgian, or Flemish, whatever...but not Italian. Their stuff is very distinct.
