    Knights Cross, opinions wanted!

    Hi guys!

Knights Crosses are not my expertise, I had a discussion with a friend regarding this Knights Cross, and he told me that the opinions regarding originality on these has changed back and forth.

What is this? A period war time piece, post war, copy?

Please enlighten me what the opinion on these type of crosses are.

    Here are some pics.

Interesting cross. I don't particularly like this type of frosting, or the ragged appearance of parts of the frame from the side, or the silver marks for that matter, but it would still be nice to see more photos, of the same clarity as in Post #4, showing the beading details in the upper 3 o'clock arm corner, the lower 3 o'clock arm, and the 6-9 o'clock and 9-12 o'clock corners. Can we assume, from the spot of rust on the date corner, that the core is iron?

Thanks for the reply, here are the the requested pics and some additional info.

The cross has an iron core, it is magnetic, the edges seems to have been polished or maybe first slightly sanded and then polished, this is what my friend told me.

It has the attributes of a "B" type 800 magnetic S&L cross. It is considered to be post war by many.
I agree with Leroy, a few strange things about this one though. The silver mark spacing looks strange, I am not sure I can see the 6-9 o'clock flaw, and the edges look ragged. The dent row on the 3 o'clock arm is not as weak as one might expect? Looking at the core paint and the weak looking dates, it seems possible that the cross has been apart, repainted and then re-soldered. It will be interesting to see the expert opinions on this one.

IMHO not war time made KC

My guess, without being able to examine the cross in hand, is postwar assembled from leftover parts. The frame has only one small flaw in the beading on the vertical 3 o'clock arm, so definitely, IMO, pre-1957. Still, as I said before, an interesting cross and one I would like to have for study.

It really looks like it has been taken apart and then put together again. The assembly looks rather sloopy.

It looks like that cross with "updated" ring that we discussed before, ...rough 800 mark looks familiar.

                          Here it is:

Great eye (and great memory, too)! Exact same cross, based on wear to the swastika.
