    EKI 1870 with inscription

    Gentlemen,
I have this EKI 1870, but i'm not sure, - real or fake.
And who was Wilhelm freiherr von Putlitz?

    Size: 42X42mm
    Weight: 15,7 gramm
    Iron core.

Thank you for your help in advance .

    Hello

Maybe you could use a darker background on the obverse shot. The light background closes the shutter and makes the black face of the cross too dark.

    Thanks,

    Brian

          Much better, thanks

          1913 No Putlitz.

You know we've been discussing these and have little to no basis in provenance to distinguish period, later and just plain post WWII to these, easily. We know the Latvian fakes but we desperately need a scientific method of understanding these.

          I again call for spectoscopy!

            Thank You Brian!
By another words, it's too difficult to say about authentic of this cross?
The reverse was polished by another owner.
            May be it can help?

            And how about von Putlitz?
            He's a real man?

              Gans Edler zu Putlitz

              Alex,

in 1869 there were six officers with the name Freiherr Gans Edler zu Putlitz. In normal use they would be termed von Putlitz:

              Two X Hauptmann
              One X Premier-Lieutenant
              Three X Sekonde-Lieutenant

Of course the Prussian lists have no first names! I am expecting an 1872 Rang- und Quartier-Liste in the next few days and that will at least show who won an EK1 and possibilby enable me to narrow down which is the officer concerned.

Brian, the family von Putlitz are listed in the Ranglisten under Gans.

              Regards
              Glenn

                  Hi Alex,

I received my 1872 Rang- und Quartier-Liste today.

In it are listed one plain von Putlitz and a further 5 Freiherr Gans Edler zu Putlitz and one Gans Edler Herr zu Putlitz. Unfortunately although most have an EK2, none are shown with an EK1. No officer of that name was killed during the Franco-German War.

                  Regards
                  Glenn
