Check against this one from my collection and concentrate e.g. on letter "m" in März or the dots of the "ä" in the same word.
One of the best fakes ever if you do not know what to look for. And no, the difference in the letters is not a maker´s variation in this case.
Frank, in the photo you posted, it seems that the m in Marz is not the same as the 2 letters m in memel. Is that correct for an original? Mine is the same as John's I think.
I know, I owned this one for more than 25 years - even when I aquired this medal it was almost impossible to find an original, it has not become easier over the years..

Looking for any original items related to Danish W-SS volunteers
The thing that is painful is that most collectors think they are safe and can rely on gut feeling when buying a "common" award such as this one or a campaign shield. Fact is, that unless you study even these simple items hard and know the fakes which are among the most excellent, you will in 80% of the cases end up with a fake shield or Memel medal. Do not underestimate these "common" items.
This thread has actually raised more questions than answers for me.
Are we assuming that all medals which have the same identified lettering on the reverse
i.e. if the M and A of Marz is the same size as the M and A of MEMELLANDES
that these are all fakes ??
It has been pointed out to me that the Detlev update also pointed out the fact that there were other attributes to this fake. i.e. the rim edging is a different width front and back. The eagle is also a point to note.
Can I confirm this as I missed the original update as I think we may be again like the Krim Shield be on dangerous ground with this one.
