These flatback ostvolks appear from time to time- I think they are ok. There was an idea that these were 57 awards but the ostvolk series was not authorised for 57 reissue so not being obvious fakes they are probably pre 45

            Hi,

very nice eagle and skull. the eagle is thick and heavy made of zinc alloy which has aluminum prongs typical for this maker Ferdinand Wagner 475/42 and 475/39. The skull is also zinc alloy by Deschler&Son.

                  Cysior,

you must be right , this kind of prongs by Deschler&Sohn is typical for aluminum variation.

It is much more rare, but that style of crimped prong attachment was also used by Deschler on some zinc skulls. This appears to be one of those to me.

I was just wondering if such Deschler's skull made of zinc with this style of crimped prong attachment existed. I tried to locate some on the web sites but no results , indeed it appears to be one of those you relate to and indeed it appears to be much more rare variation.

                        The skull is zinc, 100%.

It is - Chris wrote an interesting article about these >>

                          http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...=Deschler+Zinc

Apparently , the die originally used for the Alu version was modified to make them . Now featuring e.g. the crack under the nose like a Zimmermann , and a more " hollow " jawbone , they offer a unique appearance - IF these details are still visible .
                          Here's a nice crisp one ..

Reverse - ZINC Deschler with crimps .

Also notice the small upward hook on one of the prongs , sometimes seen on the 252/42 ..
