    Germany Awards "New Iron Cross"

Reported on the news that Germany has awarded the first bravery awards since the end of WW2. See link http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8136612.stm

Slightly misleading as this is called an Honour Cross and is not really a continuation of the series, but thought you might find this interesting.

Very interesting. As a modern collector my first question is: Who has made these new awards .

However it would be better if I stand still for a moment an think a bit more about the bravery of these recently awarded men.

About time the Bundeswehr had a gallantry award. It looks a little like a cross between the old Militaerverdienstkreuz and the Crown Order.

Here it is, someone mentioned that it's to bad that they aren't named, I have to agree. I'am starting to like the design though:

              Eh, journalists...

Looks like a Kronen Orden to me.

Yes, I remember that, too. Maybe not quite that long, but a few years at least. But perhaps this is the first time it's been awarded?

                      Hi,

the cross itself has been around for some years,

the cross and ribbon are just the same, but for the gallantry version, which is new, the oakleaves on the ribbon have been added, that's the only difference

that's the political line of least resistance, as a "real" new iron cross would have been considered politically controversial by left wing forces, so none of the politicians had the backbone to step forward for a new IC

There is no reason for any new Iron Cross. Germany is not at war.

Any award, other than the Iron Cross, can be instituted for valor when Germany is NOT AT WAR.

I hope they didn't forget to make a Knights cross of the Cross of Honour for Bravery version...
