    Copy Gold Stern der Völkerfreundschaft / Star of Friendship Between Nations

    I just purchased copy of the Gold Stern der Völkerfreundschaft / Star of Friendship Between Nations. It was just over $10 so I couldn't resist buying it since it's unlikely I'll own an original one anytime soon.

    This long pin version of the star was identified as a copy back in the 1990s by the Society of East German Military Collector's (SEGMC's) journal, Die Nationale Volksarmee.

    Here are scans of the front and back.

      Here is a gold one to compare with. To be fair your copy isn't too bad at all, I've seen worse.

        Dave, Thanks for showing your original medal. Someone went to a lot of trouble to make my copy, even down to the enamel work. But in the end you can see that the details just are not as sharp or as crisp as on yours. plus the very top tip of my star is slightly curved to the left.

          Great images of the copy - it is amazing that the pin set up on the copy
          appears far more ``beefy`` and substantial than the original! I am certain
          that it would cost more than 10 dollars to have one produced these days.

            I ran across the article in the East German Military Collector's (SEGMC's) journal, Die Nationale Volksarmee about this copy:

            Copies of the East German Stern der Volkerfreundschaft have recently turned up in the collections of several longtime collectors of DDR decorations. These fraudulent copies are distinguishable from the genuine article in several different ways: The copies show obvious signs of being castings, with a complete absence of die marks and a minute lip of flashing being visible on the edge of the decoration closest to its smooth rear side; The genuine article, in contrast, is die struck with the distinctive die marks on the edges of the decoration and has a textured (damascened) rear surface. On the forgeries, Flashing also appears in the form of raised beads on the centers of the rays of the starburst, which may be unevenly smoothed or sanded off. The feathers of the left (visible) wing of the peace dove are distinct on the original, showing three separate 'notches" to differentiate the feathers. On the forgery, these feathers are indistinctly differentiated, with two shallow "scratches" in lieu of notches.                 We did a thread on the copies of this star a few years ago on this forum. It included the info from the SEGMC but was much more comprehensive. It might be worth your while to do a search for the thread.

                    Gordon, I did a search yesterday and didn't see that specific thread. I had that snippet for SEGMC as a text file on my computer so I thought that was it.

                        Those are the ones I remember as being some of the best posts but there may be others buried in threads not directly linked to the star. The ones with the long pins are easy to pick out as fakes but there are probably better ones on the market now since it has been a while since we concentrated on them.
