German forum member needed!! for location help

    recently i met a 90 yr old american vet....was captured on 1 january 45.
was liberated 15 april 45 by russian cavalry from stalag IVB.
Stayed behind Russian lines until august 45 and was witness to some incredible things....the vet is still very cognizant of his surroundings and made 25 hours of tapes available to me of discussions he had 10 years ago with a local historian.... he was befriended by 2 german women from Riesa/Elbe.
His son wants to go to Germany with him next spring and he is wants to see if these 2 women are still alive...below is a picture of the document signed by a Frau Elstermann that was given to this vet in the summer of 45 before they parted ways.....she was married to a german soldier who was killed at stalingrad....when he left her she gave him her husbands rucksack that he brought back from leave prior to meeting his fate in russia...(i have this and got some cool pics of a kv2 as well!)....
any help from our German members in locating this family or any members listed on this document would be greatly appreciated.....
please write with any info or what i can do to help make this happen
    thanks
    mike

I tried to find Elstermann and Klennert in Riesa (today o town in Saxonia with more than 35.500 inhabitants) in the recent phonebook - with no results.
The addresses in East Prussia (as Tilsit) you can forget. These parts are not any more Germany.
Even in Rheinhausen I could not find the name Elstermann. I think it will be difficult to identify this family members very soon.

It seems that both woman are not saxons (perhaps refugees - In 1945 many refugees from the east and south east went through saxony, even a large number settled down and stayed there),

If you really want to try to find a trace of these woman, you must contact the church or inhabitant office or Riesa - there is a small chance, expecially with the church.

Mike, are there some more informations about Erna E.? Maybe the vet knows her age (in 1945), place of birth and confession. That would be very helpful in case of a personal research.

For a research you have to go back to the roots (in most of the cases!) So forgett the name Elstermann for a while and start with her maiden name which should be Erna... Behrendt (father Otto Behrendt, married to Elstermann, maybe born in Tilsit).

As a start, here some research sources:

        Evangelisches Zentralarchiv Berlin
        Bethaniendamm 29
        10997 Berlin
        Telefon: +49 (030) 22 50 46 45
        http://www.ezab.de/

        Deutsche Zentralstelle für Genealogie Leipzig,
        Schongauerstr.1,
        04329 Leipzig

        Standesamt I in Berlin
        Rückerstraße 9
        10119 Berlin
        http://www.berlin.de/standesamt1/

The other way to get more and better personal dates of Erna E. is to find out more about her KIA houseband!

Possible housebands of E. Elstermann (WASt) if KIA in Stalingrad

        Hans Elstermann
        *09/25/1909 in Luckau
        +12/20/1942 Karpowka/Stalingrad

        Kurt Ernst Elstermann
        *05/17/1904 in Bernburg
        +01/07/1943 Stalingrad

Search for them in Luckau or Bernburg (civil registery office) and you maybe will find informations about a (possible) marriage with Erna E. and her personal dates.

There are some more ways, but that should be enough for a start. Good luck, not an easy try

The way via Standesamt I Berlin will not bring you to the goal because they are not willing to do research for you by only giving them a vague name without any date (e. g. birthday) and you must be related with that person.

Right, but I´m not saying Mike should make the third or fourth step on first place!
Mrs. Elstermann geb. Behrends seemed to be a displaced person at that time, so all try´s will be difficult or at least will not work, without knowing more about her roots (date and place of birth for example)

After you found out these informations, the real research will start.

As said, not an easy try

Isn't there a union or association (Vereinigen) of Fluchtlinge von Ostpreußen that might have information of die Familie Behrendt von Tilsit?

                        Hallo Mike,

could you please control the exact spelling of the name of the town?
It could be Merseburg or Meersburg.

                        Mersbuerg could be wrong.

If the town would be named Merseburg I found 3 entries Elstermann in the recent German phone book:

                          1) Antje
                          2) Henry
                          3) Marianne

You could try to contact them.

Schafstädt today is incorporated in the town Bad Lauchstädt.
In the Bad Lauchstädt phone book I could not find any entry Elstermann but in the area (about 25 Km round Bad Lauchstädt) I found more than 10 entries with this name - but Egbert or Eva Maria.
