    help on MP40 sling...

    Greetings,

Just picked up this MP40 sling today,

Supposedly it came from a Vet.

    Anyways, here are some pictures:

I have read about the cross hatching commonly seen on these slings, which this one doesnt have... so I am a bit concerned it may be repro...

It does have the stripes down the sides though.

Anyways, just wanted to share the pics and see what other collectors thought about it!

It does seem pretty well worn, especially at the one end, like the leather was rubbed off from being installed on a MP... but who knows....

    Thanks,

    Christian

You said in a previous thread you could pick out the fakes from the originals by the buckles. Take a look at these photos and tell me which ones are the MP40 slings.

              Hello
Sure I will , no problems , except it will cost you $100 per opinions , how about that for a quiz ???
Please send the payment via money order , as I it is not refundable .
But it is your lucky day ,#2,3,4,5 are all post-war , #1 is period but for the K98 ( from these pictures , which are not good)
              Regards

Please explain your answers. I am sure your fellow collectors would want to know why you think these are what you think they are. The reason I put these up is because we have a lot of unchallenged opinions with no explaination for the opinion. Please point out what is wrong with these slings.

Oh, yes, the pictures are crap. I did not have the light I needed at the time to make them. The next day with bright sunlight here I will replace the photos.

When you say fake, do you mean fake or just not MP40 slings? There is a difference.

I feel I should go a little further to explain my posts. I am from the old school of collecting where we helped our fellow collectors avoid the pitfalls of fakes and unscrupulous dealers. Yes, well before the internet and contrary to popular belief there was life before the internet. Too many times I see on the internet forums collectors afraid to point out what makes an item questionable for fear that the fakers will read it. Guys, the fakers already know what they are doing wrong with these fakes and prey on those with little or no experience to get away with it. They are looking for that easy sale, that potential buyer who is not experienced enough to know a fake from an original. That is why I feel that it is important to share our knowledge with the newer collectors to help them avoid spending hard earned money on fakes.

Pronouncing an item a fake with no further explanation only plays into the hands of the fakers because you give the new collector no meaningful information to take away from the thread to use in future purchases. In an effort to keep your knowledge from the fakers you actually end up helping them.

These are not good- not period made, and also not fakes. These are post war, made in Austria, from 50's to 70's. How to recognise that these are not good ? Simple!

Insead more ' flat ' pins in slings made in Germany pre 1945. I used to sell these made in Austria to renactors. Slings came from 1955- 1970, leather was finished grey, brown, black or natural-blackened. All were made with same friction buckles. I do hope that now post-war slings would be easier do recognise ;-)

                            Robert,
If you are right many of those sold by you came to Russia as originals. I even found one like this attached to one of the devices in my collection. I never thought it to be original as I had received it for free but I also never payed any attention to the difference between them. Those you say are post-war have what I would call three-piece friction pin - the washers are rotating around it freely in my case.

anyway sometimes i simply call fake all post war/repro junk etc sorry for that confusion
