Meet the New Guy: Gebirgsjäger Oblt DKiG Winner's Tunic

    Hi All -

Wanted to share my latest aquisition with the forum. This is a named and dated (1940) tunic to Oberleutnant Waldemar Friedrich, who won his DKiG on May 21, 1943 as a member of First Company, Jäger Regiment 207. Friedrich was MIA on December 19, 1943 as a Hauptmann in the Ukraine. As of now, that's all the informationI have on him pending more research. My thanks to Simon Orchard, Bernhard Holst and Rick Lundstrom for their help in uncovering in formationon Herr Friedrich.

The tunic itself is a real honey in a great doeskin wool - most likely a walking out tunic. Tailored in Munich, where Friedrich was born. The only ding is a (unfortunately most likely postwar) snag on the collar - otherwise I would say it's in excellent to near mint condition.

                Don:

Congrats on the outstanding tunic acquisition. Very nice looking tunic!

Are you branching out beyond piped / dress tunics or have you always collected other types, as well?

                Regards,

                Drew

                  Thanks, Drew -

I am a Waffnerock/Piped Tunic guy at heart, but haven't been able to locate a GJ dress or piped tunic that I feel good about/can afford. This one being ID'd and a DKiG winner seemed like a good compromise!

Very nice Don, you have to love named and researched tunics.

                            Hi ,

First - let me congratulate you to this excellent tunic.

I checked the Vermisstenliste of the Jäger-Rgt.207 and could not find Friedrich. Then I checked with the Volksbund; According to the Volksbund - Hauptmann Waldemar Friedrich died in the Field hospital Sanko 1/335 at Bolschaja-Lepatischa in the Ukraine and is buried at Welikaja Lepeticha - Ukraine.

                            Regards, Hardy

BTW: Waldemar Friedrich was born on May 24th 1921

Thanks, Hardy! Simon mentioned that the replacement batallion for the 207 Jäger Regiment was the 100th Ersatz Gebirgsjäger Batalion. From what I have been able to find so far, Friedrich was "seconded" to the 207th Jäger at the time of the action that resulted in his DKiG award. I appreciate the information!
