                    Lorient shield

                    Hello,

Here's a real controversial piece. My parents brought this home from Egypt in 1971 or 72'. They bought it for about $5 from a bazaar outside Cairo. It is made of some kind of soft metal, melted together and looks like it was poured into a mold. It measures 3 1/8" long and a hair over 1 1/2" wide. The piece looks damn good and I've had it for over 35 years and that's Almighty God's truth.

Anyway, I posted pix a couple years back so here it is again - with a much better camera. The comments last time were, in sum, that the badge never existed. One notable collector stated it's the best he'd ever seen.

My research has disclosed no known examples and the manifest weight of the evidence holds a negative view. However, I have found one authority suggesting it did exist: Robin Lumsden, "A Collector's Guide to Third Reich Militaria", pp. 32-33, 1987 (ISBN: 0-7110-1723-9).

                    Christopher

Hello, perhaps this thread must be on Wehrmacht General Awards?

The shield did exist, but the one shown is a fake unfortunatly.

Well, let's just say that things can change a lot in 20 years!

                            Hello,

Has anyone seen a "LORIENT" quite like this?

Here's an interesting article which discusses the shield and the open controversy:

http://www.bender-publishing.com/rbendadvisor.htm The Military Advisor, vol. 1, no. 4.
