    SS MK wooden casket

What does anyone think of this variant SS box? While it is understood that this kind of item was used in SS marriage ceremonies, the inscription on this lends credence to what forum member Coco once wrote ,in his thread, that he had "heard that these boxes were intended for the relatives of SS soldiers KIA.

Yeah, this looks like a wooden case adorned with runes that was made to hold a copy of Mein Kampf, and was given to every newly-wed SS couple.

Interesting variant though, as this one doesn't have SS runes carved out on the front. Maybe a case that held a copy of Mein Kampf given to the family of an Allgemeine SS mann KIA?

Hello Horrido, yes I understand that , but this one has the Killed In Action carved on it , which lends to the theory that some were for relatives of the deceased. I dont know for sure and may never know.
            Thanks, Michael

Sorry for stating the obvious! As for the meaning behind this one......you've got me there.

                Hi Michael

I have not seen a box like this before, but I suppose it is logical that it could be have been originally used to house mementoes of the chap, such as medals etc

Hello Raymond, yes that would make sense. using the Wehrmacht-Awards "search"button for SS MK casket/boxes revealed there is also a rumor that some boxes were found to hold ashes. This implies to me the possibility that it held the cremated remains of the soldier, or less onerous, the burnt remains of the person's mementos? Or who knows?
                  Thanks!

Good lord. It does not look like the kind of box I would like my ashes in. Then again, it is better than a little urn, I suppose

I have been thinking and I am not sure of German military funeral protocol and whether a flag was presented to the family.

A flag would probably fit in it, with the medals on top to be presented to the family.

Obviously, this is just conjecture, but it certainly is interesting.

If you find out more, then I would be great to hear more about this item.

                    Raymond

                      Michael.

Looks like a casket that has been custom done as a one-off..............had the centre-piece replaced.

It certainly looks period done. It could even have been done by relatives in, say, 1946..............I have my doubts about whether this sort of alteration would have been officially 'sanctioned'.

These boxes were never intended to hold the belongings of dead SS men.......or their ashes!
