    Indian SS Sleeve Shield?

I have found this online. It's not for sale, but I'm curious to know if it's a fantasy item or not. Perhaps it is a real item, but never got into use? I know Hitler wanted to use some Indian troops who wanted to free themselves from British rule.

If it is real, how much can one go for? Anyone seen one before? Anyone have one in their collection?

Its a terrible copy... The black border did not exict (there was no Indian SS version with a black border) and the entire construction (computer generated embroidery?) is totally wrong! Its a fantasy item...Nick

      Indian Legion

      Greetings All,

Imho this embroidered insignia is a reproduction. I know that BeVo pieces were made but I do not believe that an embroidered example was produced.

Throw this picture out of mind. I'm really trying to find out if there was even such a thing as this. Does anyone have a pics of original ones?

This is the only recognized type as far as I know!

This is the only recognized "text book" type, as far as I know.
So to play it safe I suggest to avoid ALL other (printed and embroidered) types.
This Freies Indien woven sleeve patch was worn in the wehrmacht on the right upper sleeve and continued to be worn in the Waffen SS (1945) also on the upper right sleeve position. (there is photographic proof of that, a German Waffen SS cadre officer, I'll dig it up!) Nick

                    Waffen SS use

Good BeVo weave Freies Indien shields are very hard to find... Here's the BeVo weave shield worn by a Waffen SS cadre member assigned to the unit when it was transferred to Waffen SS control (in 1945 I believe). Note this is not my picture...credit belongs to "collection stdubay". If owner wants it removed let me know! I just could not resist sharing it! One of my favorite foreign legion Waffen SS Officer's portraits! Sorry for the bad quality...my scanner is not working.. so I had to take a picture of the picture and the flash is too strong... But anyway its proof that the standard Army shield was adopted by the Waffen SS. The blank collar tab worn by this Waffen SS officer is also remarkable! Nick

The only one wartime picture I know of an Indian Waffen-SS (I don't remenber where I got this picture, maybe on this forum). Notice the armshield and the right collar tab with the tiger head.

Great picture Francois. I also remember seeing it before and the tiger collar patch is awesome. I just forgot it also showed the legion shield as well.
So now we have 2 known SS pictures with the Freies Indian Shield depicted!
                        Any more out there? Nick

Anyone know anything on this "stdubay collection"? Does anyone have any other items? I would be interested in buying/trading for them as I have Indian heritage.

                              printed version 1944?

According to Ian's excellent foreign legion shield's web site perhaps some printed version are acceptable after all.
His web site on foreign volunteer shields states the following:
"Freies Indien" shields belonged to Kurt Krappe, Oberst Indien Legion".
                              Here is the shield below!
                              Web site:
                              http://website.lineone.net/~thevolunteers/index.htm
Note the way better printing quality and straight "Freies Indien" text, compare with the earlier examples!), also the cut lines, which are lacking on the other shown printed shields. This one has provenance and I LIKE IT! but I honestly can't say if printed versions were used/issued...Nick
