    A wounded foreign legionnaire, and other Ivory Coast pictures

    I was surfing the web looking for information about the war in Ivory coast, and found numerous interesting pictures, and thought it could make an interesting thread.
    I lived in Ivory Coast for a few months as a kid, so I have particular interest in what is happening there.
    Most of the pictures or the info for this thread were taken from the following sites:

    I will post the pictures with a brief text relating to the events surounding the picture. Pardon any mistakes I may make, as things are extremely confusing to understand....

    In 2002, rebel groups rose up in the north of Ivory Coast, and the government was unable to control their advance. Here is a rebel checkpoint on a bridge:

    Since they were having difficulty controling the rebels, the Ivory Coast government asked for the French army to intervene to stop the rebels advance.

      The French troops were welcomed at their arrival in Abidjan. One of the units sent in was part of the famous 2ieme REP, or 2nd Foreign Legion Paratrooper Regiement.

        The rebels were told that they were not to advance south of a fixed line, or else they would be considered legitimate targets and be attacked by the French troops.
        Here, a Legion vehicle is garding that line.

          The rebels were not to pleased, and at the end of 2002, they attempted to force their way south, and several firefights occured between French troops and rebels.

            Here is a destroyed rebel pick up truck being examined by a Legionnaire. The green beret is only in use in the Legion, or for Navy Commandoes in the French Army.

              You can imagine that in the zone of fighting, things were chaotic, especialy for civilians. Here a body lies abandoned... Who know if he is a rebel, a civilian, or who he was killed by...

                      On january 21st 2003, this Legion vehicle was hit by an RPG 7 rocket.

                        The RPG 7 was loaded with an armor piercing shaped charge.
                        A shaped charge generates a projection of molten metal at a speed of several thousand meters per second...

                          As you can see, this "molten jet of metal projected at several thousand meters per second" went through the armor of the vehicle with no problem. It then went throught the stearing weel of the vehicle, and the arms of the Legionnaire driving it. An other legionnaire was standing on the passenger seat, and was wounded in the feet.

                            Here is an other view of the damage inside. I expect that the Legionnaires must have kept the steering weel as a souvenir for their museum.

                              Some curious legionnaires inspect the damage. The winged sword on the beret is the insignia of the french paratroopers. On a green beret, that insignia shows that its wearer is part of the 2ieme REP.
