Hello, somewhere in this forum I thought there was a thread searching for camo helmet covers other than splinter. In this months issue of WWll History magazine is this photo. It appears to be a manufactured atypical helmet cover. It has the appearance of Italian fabric. The background suggests Stalingrad. Best, Bill Bourque

Not the typical Splinter or various SS camo. Imagine if this came up for sale while applied to a German shell. Many if not all would pass judgement as a fake. Nice war time photo Bill. Haven't heard from you in a long time. Feel free to send me an email.

If this is a press photo, it may be a glimt of "artisitic freedom".
Photographs were propaganda back then as well as now they are now (but more obvious).
Considering this was taken in Stalingrad, they want to give the impression of german superiority on the front.
The soldier does not apear to be frightened, there is a sharp clear expression on his face.
As well as the way he is holding the weapon, a confident posture.
The "good guy" has taken down so many enemies, hes not only picked up their weapon to fight on, but hes also made himself a nice cammo cover of a russian poncho/"uniform".
So it might not have been used in actual combat.
Interesting photograph indeed!Last edited by C7riS; 11-10-2006, 11:03 PM.

It's a Hungarian one. The Hungarian army designed covers for their helmets that had the same design as the one pictured.
Here's one that was up for sale a little while ago. http://militaria-antik.hu/254.html Be aware that a lot of stuff on this site has items with fake insignia on them, just in case any of you want to buy something.
Here's pictures of Hungarain reenactors wearing them. I bought ine just like it for my impression.
