    How to restore a helmet?

    Hi Guys,
I bought a complete helmet as you might say untouched. It appears that it has been sitting in a basement or damp barn, because there's quite a bit of surface rust. I can still see that there is about 40% of paint left. My question is, how can I remove the rust and grime off the top with out scratching the bit of the paint? Sanding/steel wool? probably not. Chemicals? Please help, thank you in advance.

Hi Lubos IMO donĀ“t use Sanding/steel wool because it will take the paint too I think. I think I would try to spray WD40 on to it and then use a rag and a toothbrush or another type of brush made of nylon.
That would be a start. Good luck....can you post a few pictures of the helmet?
    Cheers

In my opinion one should keep it untouched.
But it all depends on the pictures.. Even thought rusty, the helmet has got carracter, something which you cant find in mint ones.
      Lets see some pictures!

I bring this product up quite a bit. I recently got some paint splashes of a camo helmet that I picked up off ebay with the following product.

          www.griotsgarage.com

Look for the "Paint Cleaning Clay" It is meant to take the place of polishing pastes since most cars now have clear-coats over their paint. It's an ultra smooth clay that you rub over the finish of your car/helmet and it pics up and takes away all the grime and grit.

You have to order both the clay, and the Speed shine to use as a spray so the clay will glide over the surface. It's a water based spray and will not damage your helmet. If you are also members of Germandaggers.com, I've linked my latest "restoration" below.

Thank you all for the advice. Here are pics of the helmet. I've started the cleasning with wh40 and it looks promising.

Yeah, that lid has definately got character. I wouldn't do anything with it except clean it with the WD40.

Where are the holes in the liners' fingers?.....As for WD-40, some say it encourages rust.....It's a penetrant, but not a good lubricant/protectant.....Personally, I'd prefer a good gun oil.....Bodes

Looks like a beaded shell, is that some kind of civil liner? I have never seen a liner like that before.

You can try the liquid product made for removing rust from clothes: as soon a you've done it clean the helmet with water and dry it.

I saw the beaded portion as well.....Dark Blue paint would fit a Luftschutz helmet.....Have to admit, I don't recognize the line either......Bodes
