Here is one that I just received.
A page from a Paul Küst catalog. This one I think is pre WW1. 1895-1914.
The only Eks pictured are 1870s PLUS it shows the 1895 Jubilee Oak leaves.
Paul Küst is not a known EK maker but many miniature and button hole awards can be found marked "Paul Küst" This makes me wonder if maybe
Küst was a maker of the 25 year Oakleaf attachment

Just because it is listed in their catalogue you can’t assume that they produced everything they have shown. By that I mean, take the ribbons, traditionally there has only ever been a few firms that produced the ribbons and all the medal makers would source their ribbons from them. It would also seem sensible that 50+ different firms are not all going to have the dies for everything, Fritz down the road at XYZ and Co probably made a handful of different awards, Karl at ABC and Sohn etc would do the same and the larger companies would ether source their medals from different home operators or the larger firms like CE Juncker, Godet etc would most likely produce most of their own medals.<O</O<O

Would the old soldiers have to prove they were awarded a certain piece before they could buy it or could they just buy what they wanted? And how much would an Iron Cross bought from the jewellers in the 1920s cost in today's money?

Officially yes you needed to show your formal award document or your Solbuch/Wehrpass. <O</O
