    Hi Fellow Collectors

May I have your opinion on this Cholm Shield? It looks good to me.

    Thanks and Regards

I don't like it. This piece lacks the razor sharp detail I expect in originals, particularly around the eagle's head. The swastika looks fuzzy too; reminds me of a cast piece.

          Cholm Shield

Brian, I agree with Gene. The badge has imperfections in the overal finish. The worst area is about the cross on the right side. If these were rust spots would they have not bled through? Just my thoughts...
          Zinc stinks!

Look at the closeups of the Cholm shields in the Image Gallery and compare

              Cholmshield

              Hello,

I can only confirm what others have expressed already => it is not one that I like , the eagles head does not have the detail of teh original known ones, there seems to be is a strange pitting on the shield ? , etc ....

Iff it is already in your collection, is there a way of returning it and getting your money back ? ( as that is the safest way , wait and look as much as you can + im sure one day there will be one that gets a thumb up )

The above is offoarse just my own opinion

                        Hello Brian,
IMO that is definately not an original Cholm Shield. The two traits I look for immediately when trying to determine authenticity are : #1 - Look at the head, it usually tells the whole story.
And # 2 - The cross section in the letter "H" in the word CHOLM should be centered within the letter, not lower than center as your posted example shows. I would like to post my original to
illustrate what I have stated for your comparison. Hope this helps!

Looks to me like a very badly worn piece with surface corrosion that someone has tried to clean up with a wire brush! I have seen this on a Cholm once before. The lower than centre crossbar on the H is quite correct for the version with the longer centre leg to the letter M.
Only thing is if it is a heavily pitted/corroded original that someone has buffed up, then the cloth backing would have deteriorated so at the very least it must have been re-backed. Though very worn, the head looks like the shape of the variant "M" type.
I'm nowhere near convinced its fake, but if original its condition is not consitent with the condition of the backing cloth it is on., so something isn't quite right. Not one I would buy.

Here is mine for comparison, I always had a good feeling about it being original.

                              I also back GordonĀ“s theory.

There is a possible way how somebody could have rubbed the shield with a wire brush, used a silver polishing cloth, even used rust remover acid with a paintbrush on it without ruining the cloth:

Just shove flexible, strong but thin sheets of plastic right between shield and cloth on all sides as deep as you can shove them. Have the plastic sheets overlap so everything cloth is covered. Rub away!

As long as the price was really ok (200-250 USD), this shield is still collectible, I think.

                              Cheers, Frank
                              Cheers, Frank
