Very interesting thread! Normally not my area of interest, although what brought me here is the recent receipt of several of there below photographed examples. I did learn that I am one shy of a complete set a Ostpreussen is missing. Is there any desirability of near complete sets?
No doubt this one is WHW and I don't remember if it has been previously posted...too many of these things! I am impressed by the size and detail of this example at just a hair over 4cm across.
Dave, your WHW items of post #287 are really nice & in great condiiton, but they are NOT of cities/towns as has been mentioned previously; the badges of post #287 depict crests/flags of PROVINCES/districts.
The colorful VDA tin badges you posted in post #288 actually do depict coats-of-arms of cities & towns, & these cities/towns were outside Germany at the outset, & of course welcomed back into the Reich. Rudolf Hess created the Foreign Organization (AO= Auslands Organization) of the NSDAP on 3.Okt.1935, & associated with the AO, was the VDA with Hess also in control. Some background history on some of your VDA city/town shields: Kulm was in West Prussia; Oliva was in West Prussia near Danzig; Reichenberg was in the Sudentenland, now Libere in the Czech Republic; Aussig was in the Sudentenland, now Usti in the Czech Republic; Plesz was in Silesia, now in Poland; Sohrau was in Silesia, now Zory in Poland; Teschen's new name is Tesin; Sonderburg was in Denmark, now called Sonderborg; Pettau is now Ptuj in Slovenia; Gottschee is now called Kocevje in Slovenia , even has the same coat-of-arms; Stadt-Tarvis is now Tarvisio in Italy; Güns is now Köszeg in Hungary, a large Nazi Slave Labor Camp was there; Nösnergau was in northeast Transylvania (Romania); Bistritz is now Bistrita in Romania, was part of Hungary 1940-1944, & still has the same city coat-of-arms of the ostrich with a horseshoe in its beak.
