    Hi All -

I have studied the three photos of the officer in question and unfortunately I do not know him. There are, however, several observations I was able to arrive at regarding his identity.

First, the officer appears to have served in the division in early 1944. The unique uniform insignia were issued to the division at Neuhammer in either late 1943 (December) or early 1944 (January). The fact that the man appears without an overcoat suggests that the photos were taken sometime after March 1944.

The fact that the man, who is obviously a German, is wearing a fez in one of the photos suggests that the picture was taken before 1945. Few if any German officers wore fezzes late in the war.

In one photo, the man is wearing a War Merit Cross, 1st Class and no combat decorations. This suggests that the man was an administrative officer.

As more of this man's Nachlass becomes available, I will do my best to provide further information if possible.

    I'm sorry I couldn't provide more information.

    Best regards,

    George

      George:

Many thankx for the effort put into this, it is very much appreciated. With the information you have supplied, along with a little luck and a break or two, hopefully this Officer can soon be positively identified....

His war merit cross 1st and 2nd classed are both with swords -- wouldn't that indicate combat service of some sort? (just curious)

          Hi Scott -

The award indicates meritorious service within a combat unit. If this guy was an administrative officer, which I believe he was, the fact that he was serving in a combat division when he exhibited meritorious conduct means it would rate swords.

          (I hope this makes sense!)

          Best regards,

          George

OK - I think understand now. Actual combat under qualifying conditions would have rated the addition of a GAB or IAB.

            Thanks George.
