    question - cleaning a dagger - hanger

    Hello,

I have obtained a dagger (LW.) with its original hanger + knot.

    Offcoarse as a non dagger man i have a few question about this piece;

    * Can you date this piece ?
    * Is it a certain model ? (like for example: Blücher or something like that?)
    * Can one clean such a piece ?

    All help is much appreciated.

    Cordial greetings,

        Hello,

Here are some markings that can be found on the hanger. Can anyone explain them ?

Stijn, as far as the hangers go, yours are considered the delux version. Unfortunately the catch is broken which lowers the price considerably. I would guess their value to be around $150, maybe a little more. As far as the markings go, I don't know who the UE 10 is, but the D.R.G.M. is the Deutsches Reichsgebrauchmuster or patent protection. With some photos of the dagger maybe we can get a little further.

Stijn...great to have you drop in on the Daggers Forum!

Based on the hangers, you have a 2nd Model Luftwaffe dagger. This pattern dagger was introduced on October 1, 1937. As far as dating your particular dagger, unless the maker mark is one of the few that changed slightly during the period, it would be difficult to pinpoint the date of manufacture, but - as Larry mentioned - pictures might help.

While I can't identify the maker associated with the "UE 10" marking, I know it is commonly seen on 2nd Luft hangers as well as a few others (i.e., Hitler Youth Leader)

            Hope that helps,

              Dagger

              Hello,

Thank you guys for the information already,

@ Larry you do mention a deluxe version ?, how can one ID the deluxe from the normal version?

As per request here is the dagger on its own. The piece is non maker marked on the blade ( + also needs to be cleaned, it has been on the vets. wall for about 60 years)

However no direct maker mark on the blade, iff we screw the dagger apart there is a stamped cross marking on the angle of the blade (can scan it when needed), mayby it is a control marking or do point into the direction of a certain maker ?

Any clue's ? (sorry for the lousy pictures => i only have a scanner )

              Thank you for helping,

                the cross guard

                Hello,

The cross guard and the pommel are made from aluminium, however once again no maker marks => but mayby characteristics of the bird can help us to point in a certain direction ?

Can you guys give me info on do's and dont's when cleaning such a dagger ? As when cleaning it is order to preserve better but might not be damaged in any way !!!

                Cordial greetings,

ps : check out this thread => this was the persons pilots badge

Stijn, standard hangers simply lack the ornate oakleaf decorations on the fittings, otherwise the look very similar. Different makers made numerous types and styles, all being based on the same basic design. Unmarked pieces aren't really uncommon. Unfortunately I don't know who the maker was that put the cross on the blade.

                      thank you

                      Hello,

Thank you Larry for the info, i wasn't aware of such differences. For me it does not mather iff this one is marked or not, etc ... as i know from who it was

Do you know howmuch value such a piece (in this condition, not cleaned, etc ..) go for normally ?

Stijn, for a dagger in the condition you show with hangers and portepee, probably around $600. Maybe a little more based on the condition when you actually have it "in hand".

Also I forgot to mention, don't try and clean it. If you think it's necessary, maybe some semichrome on the blade for protection, but that's it.

Hello, I guess that due to the chip on the upper grip, bits of rust on the scabbard and the hanger problem, I would go less than 600 maybe more in the area of 450$ at the most, since its unmarked. thats a "non big dealer" price. and what I would feel is a honest price for us every day blue collar folks. as to cleaning.......... thats the age old question. btw a nice un-touched piece, and really it how many are found these days!
                            my best, Bret

I agree with Larry (surprise!) A little SemiChrome on the blade to clean off any fingerprints, etc. is probably a good idea, but the overall condition of the dagger is not bad at all...best off left 'as-is'.

The daggers with unmarked blades were often produced by makers who purchased 'generic' components (to include the blades) from a variety of manufacturers, rendering the producer difficult to determine.

In any event, looks like you have a nice, untouched original dagger with a lot of history behind it.

                              Congratulaions!
