Very good eye Van! This is indeed a reproduction.

        Hi Guys,
I am not ready to condemn this badge. To my eye it looks like extremely worn 5C variation (according to timeline) with shortened main pin. But I may be wrong since it is hard to be sure about the badge in such bad shape.
        Cheers,
        Hubert

          Hello Hubert,

this one simply screams casting. Look at the pitting on the front, the weak detail, the sunken body of the reverse with the high edges of the badge. I seriously doubt that this is an original Schwerin badge.

I have to agree with Hubert. This is a good but heavily worn original.

The pitting and soft detail are due to heavy wear, to my eye. Every other detail about it is right for an original Schwerin. Part of the problem in the reverse photograph is a blue cast from the camera or lighting conditions which I've removed for this comparison shot to make the colour more "natural".

Same type of Schwerin on the left, the Emeredato badge on the right. The pin is bent and it's been personalized on the upper right. The silvering on the pin has worn down to the raw Tombak.

            Best regards,
            ---Norm

Here are the original images from the sales thread so they're not lost from the discussion. Like I say, just heavily worn in my opinion.

              Best regards,

Then this must have been the dirtiest Schwerin die ever. Sorry, the comparison shows it even more that this is a fake. Look at the hook, this is not the later Schwerin hook, the whole hardware is off.

                  Hi Daniel,

Well, the catch looks typical for this late variant on the reverse view provided although admittedly it would help to see a profile view.

People are always showing their nice expensive good condition badges so I think we just don't see many of the corroded examples being posted? Here's another one of this type that was given a positive review by Gordon Williamson on GMIC and I agree it appears to be a heavily corroded, hand-vaulted original. The corrosion resembles casting pits which can cause some confusion, I'd say.

                  Best regards,
                  ---Norm

couldn't be more clearly a fake if it had "cast fake" stamped in it.

Which one are you talking about, sparks - the one at the start of the thread or the one Gordon liked which is even more pitted?

                      Best regards,
                      ---Norm

IMO all badges in this thread are original. The tomback Schwerin badges have a very noticeable grainy effect to the finish which can give a cast appearance- these late ones shown have come from a badly worn die so I put it more down to that rather than service wear

I have sent a PM to the seller and requested clear images of the catch, side shots, with the pin up. Perhaps that will help this discussion.

                            Hi gents,

thanks to John who let me know that there is a discussion about that Uboat badge (which I had on “emeredato “for nearly 6 weeks without any negative opinions).

                            1. The UBoat Badge was bought from the family of the DK Winner and UBoot crew member who served on a Monsum Boat. Bought by myself and put in my collection for a while. In the group where THREE badges (which you will see at the end). Also the Name of the owner is on the backside of the badge which is for discussion.

                            2. Thanks to Bubba and Norm jumping in on that. Background is, that I put MOST of the badges I bring on the website are for discussion on the GCA. If the badge is bad, it will not come on the website. This badge had a positive feedback and everything was fine.

                            3. I brought all the pictures to the history of the badge and new pictures I took this morning before I went to the office. So check that out……

Finally if anyone has doubts on something I sell on my website for other collectors or from my own collection, feel free to contact me or bring it on WAF or on the GCA. But INFOM me so I can tell you something about the piece. I collect for 20 years and I am sure I make mistakes.

                            Sorry about the English mistakes!

                            Thanks

                            Regards
                            Sascha

Here are the pictures from the group after getting it.
