Very interesting and something that does not come across the forum pages much. So is this a plaque that would go on like a mess hall or barracks, or is it mounted on one of the minesweeper ships?

The paint/lacquer is still present with the mouth and the eyes. Do you know how this was displayed? I am guessing that this plaque might have been kept ashore like at the HQ or crew quarters etc... because the paint has held up so nice. (that is just a guess)

It is indeed a rare find. I look forward to checking back to this thread and seeing what others have to say.

            Nice find Dion!

Seen a few of these in the past but I can't say I know much about the unit.....the pin is quite rare for sure and the Urkunde with it also, however this one appears to be a bit battered and never been issued!

I will point this out to Simon as being from Norway he might be familiar with the unit.

Very nice, great shame the document is in tatters. Same as Ian i've seen a few turn up as well as the stick pin but not a plaque.

The story behind it is that of Hans Bartels who won the RK during the Norwegian campaign for his command of the minesweeper M1. The tiger's head and crossed swords being his emblem during his command of that ship. It was subsequently carried over to the units operating under him as commander of coastal security forces of the Norwegian West coast, like the 53 Vorposten flottille.
Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.

I know a little on Bartels and the R boats. the plakette is really interesting Simon.

I read Batels had a little friction with his superiors for being a bit to creative.

Well, to discuss the items a bit:

It is a nice group but unfortunately in parts badly damaged.

The needle should have a 1940 under the Tigerhead. Not sure if it is it deleted ? if not, it is a postwar piece.

Some parts of the document are missing so it is only a fragment and a bit strange. On awarded documents there has to be a signature between "des tigerverbandes" and "kapitänleutnant". The name who it was awarded to is also missing which should stand between "verleihe ich dem" and "die eherennadel". Note, most were signed by Bartels himself although later documents when Bartels wasn't there at all are signed like official KM documents with unit postmark and signature of a KM officer.

So, this looks like a blank document never awarded. Maybe found postwar somewhere. The book is OK and they were published over a number of years, so different versions are out there.

The "Tigerplaque" ( even if most colour missing ) is quite nice.

                        Hope this helps, John

                          Hi John

Being that these are not so often seen, at least for me, is it a definite fact that ones without the 1940 are post war?

I found only one on the net from Weitze and it has the 1940, that being said mine and his have the same exact backing plate and the needle is even identical to the twists. I would expect different hardware or even a different maker on a postwar version.

THe plaque I think was originally in the state it is, I only wish I knew what it went with.

The doc of course is unissued, only history I know on it is it was found all together for certain.

                              Hello Dion,

For the dated mini I checked with a collector that specializes in this area and he stated that the 1940 is necessary for the wartime examples.

I hate to use that word definite in this hobby, but lets say accepted.

The doc is unissued as you stated but still an original doc.

Plaques are used for so many things, maybe hung in the wardroom, maybe a gift to a sailor transferred, maybe available for purchase by the sailors for other uses. Who knows? Still, the plaque is quite nice.

                              John
