    Hello fellow Collectors,

I have the same Assmann L/ 64 bought directly from Niemann about a year ago......
and if I compare it my one looks as a fake, too....or what do you think.

    Any opinion is welcome......

    Thanks and kind regards

Indeed, the same Staegemeir fake. It is an earlier generation of fake, where he simply wrapped the pin around the hingepin instead of attaching it to a central barrel first (unlike originals).

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

Assmann at the time was a premier maker of regalia and the like with badges being produced too in large quantities and many items no-doubt being leftover at the end of the war and in the firm's capacity as a major producer efforts seem to have been made to modernize and make more efficient production of badges/regalia/belt buckles and the like and as a result you see as of then modern techniques such as the progression into injection molded pieces/experimental catches on belt buckles...when I got my first injection molded para by Assmann I thought for sure it was a fake as I had at the time never seen such a technique, it was at a coin shop and the dealer swore it was a vet walk-in and it was...sadly the faker in this case has capitalized on the somewhat crude look of the original pieces.

                    What is up with this?

If this came from Niemann and it came with his COA than how come Niemann does not know this is a fake? I am not saying the item is real but I would expect that a guy like Niemann would know better! So is this just an honest mistake or is he selling fake items? Jurgen E

                        Hi ChrisH,
Exactly my point. I just don’t get it. Are these COA actually from Niemann?
I believe that Niemann who claims to be an authority has written several books and had thousands of badges in his hand would know better!

I think it's fair to say that the L/64 badge caught out all of us, it was really just (IMO) the abundance of them for sale at just about every dealer web site that allowed the truth to come out that maybe something was not right about these badges.
If I remember the main credit goes to M.Miller for the initial observation.

Think about all the stuff that goes through Detlev's hands in a single day, probably more stuff than most of us collectors handle in a year! He looks at orders from all over the world, books, insignia, etc. In this day and age of well made fakes, you just cannot look at all that stuff and be an expert in all of it. Its just too hard. You can get a good feel for stuff with a lot of hands on experience, but fakes are bound to slip through. I spend 100% of my time just looking at Heer & Luft badges, and it is all I can do to keep up with the well made fakes out there. Its just too much for someone that looks at the broad spectrum of militaria in this hobby (helmets, uniforms, guns, insignia, badges, etc., etc.).

ALWAYS buy the badge, not the dealer or not the story. Do not depend on Detlev or any dealer for that matter to do your homework for you!

So, I guess that these Sellers that all say at the end of each sales post "Sold with the expert Authentication from Detlev Nieman" are all full of Crap huh?
It's true that he looks at a high volume of stuff in one day but, If you have the reputation that he does , he needs to do better to uphold it. If you are the King, act like a King. It's the people that save and save every week for that special thing for their collection that pay the most when something bad gets through the 3 second inspection phase into the OK pile. The majority of us don't have piles of money to throw away on fakes and copies. Nor do we have the time to spend trying to get our hard earned money back. Sorry guys it just burns me up,sorry again Butch

If you are willing to hit the BUY IT NOW button when you are unsure because of the 3 second rule, then you take the lumps when it comes.

That's why people jump on Detlev's items on the "Friday Frenzy". If this one is 100% fake, he will refund you and make up for this oversight. At leasy he is good for that.

But like Tom says, why get pissed at a dealer for selling you a fake, if you don't know yourself?
