That is certainly odd. It certainly could be a civil office chain, and he sort of looks like someone holding office. Or maybe something related to shooting? Looks like it is made of coins. Bottom coin has a portrait of Hindenburg. His medal bar has the EK II, the 9-Year Service Medal, The Kyffhauser Medal and what appears to be two shooting medals. He also wears the German Veterans Association pins. Given all of that, probably taken in the late 1920s. Great pic. Steve

I agree - that looks like a chain given out to the "Schuetzenkoenig" or "shooter's king" of a local annual shooting event. I have a picture of my grandfather in 1929 wearing a chain like that. Basically they used a silver coin and polished away one side in order to inscribe the name of the new "king" for that year. So each year a new coin was added.
