    WP "basset" : Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 914

The Sturmgeschutz M 43 853 (mit 105/25) "Bassotto" (basset!) is the latest version of the Semovente Ansaldo M42.

This model had a more spacious fghting compartment. All the mechanical parts were improved and the armour plates were welded instead assembled with nuts and bolts, thus providing better protection. Germans captured after the armistice 26 M43 and they were immediatelly pressed into service, and ordered the production of 60 new M43, but the realfigure was higher: 24 in 1943 and 67 more in 1944.

The low profile of this Italian Stug gun was greaty appreciated by the German tioops, who maintained the Italian nickname of "Bassotto" (Dachshund in German). But the German crews complained about the poor ventilation of the fghting compartment, the poor visibility with closed hatches, the scarce protection provided by the armour plates, especially in the roof thee M43 105/25 guns (below in the drawings, in comparison with the most common M42 above) also sufered like other Italian from mechanical problems, made worse by the lack of spare parts.

and the 9 february 1944 the Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 914 received 31 M 43 105/25. Some of the new guns did not have any aiming devices, so they were of limited use in combat. In March 1944, the Brigade e was part of the 10. Armee and then was transferred to the Adriatic coast, in the Ancona area. Attached to the 305. Infanterie Division, the unit was bombed, although it did not get into direct contact with the enemy.
Ffrom 28th May it was sent towards Rome through L'Aquila and Rieti slowed down by air raids, which forced it to carry out the longer transfer operations at night, on 4 June it got to the capital's northern borders, fighting with Division Hermann Goring The brigade suffered heavy losses in the subsequent fighting and some M43 "Bassotto" were destroyed by the crews when immobilized by mechanical breakdowns; on 30 June, only 7 M43 were left, all under repair
