    Schutzpolizei with paper tags

A friend found this in a Southern California attic last week, still in a duffle bag from the GI who apparently bought it and another similar uniform home. This uniform still has paper tags on the outside of the coat and the breeches. Is this something placed there by a tailor shop or a government agency?

    thanks...

Here's the breeches style trousers with a similar paper tag:

And here's the other tunic (it also has a pair of breeches):

All of the items have survived the decades in pretty good shape except the tunic with the paper tag. It has a hole which looks like it may have been a burn and not a moth hole.

One more question: what is the rank on these? I have boggled my mind trying to comprehend the German collar and shoulder tab insignia.

      Hello,

Nice untouched items. Rank is the lowest NCO in the SchuPo. The tag on the sleeve is the tailor's tag, and IT is original as it matches the tailor's stamp on the interior. The rubber stamp on the label and inside is unusual, BUT everything matches. You have a Koln rubber stamp on a Koln tailored tunic. I am assuming that this stamp was used instead of the more typically seen 'PO" stamps to "accept" it from the tailor, but I am just guessing as I have never seen one stamped like this. That said I think everything is right with it. I really like the "S.Ko." (schutzpolizei Koln" stamp. Never seen that one before either.

Sleeve eagles and insignia all look good, so no problems there. The "named" eagle is the pre 1941 configuration and the second tunic the post 1941 bird.

      Nice, rarely seen "original" items.

      Best regards,

        Oceansider,

Welcome to the forum. I am a neighbor nearby in San Diego. Would it be possible for you to show all the paper tags? Any other markings in the pants and other uniform would also be of interest. Bill pretty much covered what everything is. Thanks for joining and sharing.

Congrats on a great score! How interesting to have found two Schupo tunics complete with breeches and with the original tailor paper tags...I've only seen/owned one other like this. Also interesting to note that the first example posted had not fallen subject to the late 1941 (November) regulation in having the name removed and one that appears to be post that date (like Bill mentions)...would you check the tunics interior including the interior pocket for a "Po" followed by a date acceptance stamps? Is the 2nd Unterwachtmeister (not the lowest but close to being the lowest rank) d. Schutzpol tunic also stamped similar to the first with the koln acceptance? Is there any "Po" dated stamps on the breeches? And how about a straight on shot of the unnamed sleeve eagle? Thanks for sharing these greats finds with all of us. It is most refreshing to finally see some new polizei uniform discoveries posted!

These are really fantastic apparently untouched examples out of clothing stock. The ink stamps I think indicate receipt by the Pol Pras. of Koln. The Po was applied during the time of manufacture by the tailor company according to the production guidelines issued in the Bekleidungsvorschriften. It was distributed from the Police Clothing Depots according to requisition orders from respective police administrations.

Please do check the interior markings carefully for any "Po" markings.

Here are the labels for the tunic - I don't know what a PO looks like but there was nothing in the pockets:

And here is the shoulder patch from this uniform:

Here's the stamps from the tunic that has no paper label:

And here's the trousers with no paper label, but I did discover a thread near the fly that looks like it attached a label:

The stamp in the lower right corner is kind of hard to read:

                      Thanks.

I noticed that the pair of pants that does not have a label does have thread that may have held a label and is stamped 1938. The coat with no paper label is stamped 1943 but I cannot find dates on the coat and pants with labels. I wonder if the 1938 pants would be the match for the coat with the name eagle since they both clearly have pre-1938 origins?

Here is one for comparison that is currently on the e-stand, that Dave made earlier reference to as well.

Very nice find! I'm kind of partial to this particular maker for some reason.

Thank you very much for posting all of those additional photos of the markings, which makes this an excellent study! I see the tunic with no label does have the Pol 1943 markings I was asking about...guess I should have mentioned the police acceptance could be presented in a few different ways. So, are both breeches the same cut and dated 1938?

Norman, I keep looking at that tunic and can't believe I traded it but your trade item was just to tempting to pass by. Actually, I was fianlly able to get out and test it this past weekend and it worked perfect! But still that tunic haunts me every time I see it...

                            Oceansider,

I've known Bob for a long time. Thanks for posting all the photos with the tags and markings. It's great to see things marked different than the norm, so we don't get too comfortable with what we think we know. Having all the additional markings on the tags for confirmation is great. Thanks for taking the time for all the additional photos.
