    Help with Helmet Insignia

This is the second helmet I am posting for a friend and fellow member. Looks like Police insignia, but is on the wrong side and wrong color. It looks like that it is a white decal painted black, but I suppose it could be a black decal with white backing. Anyone have any ideas?
    Regards,
    Lee

Helmet photo. It is an Austrian shell with what appear to be Czech rivets.

Early Police Helmet? Early SA Helmet?

Hello, I want to thank Lee for posting these photos for me. I have been having trouble making my file photos small enough to post and he was kind enough to help me. That being said, we have discussed this helmet insignia and are unable to determine exactly what it is. In Baer's book, he describes early police helmets, which have a decal similar to this, but are white with a black border. Also the decals of the early police helmets are on the right side and not the left. There is an early SA helmet in the book, which fits the description of my helmet. The decal is the same size, is all black in color as mine and is on the left side as it should be. There is only one problem. My helmet is green and according to Baer's book, SA helmets were painted brown. Can anybody tell us anything about this helmet. All comments and opinions are welcome. Thank you, Jay

Hello forum, 112 members have looked at this post and no one has replied but me. Surely, with all the wealth of knowledge and years of collecting experience of the members of this forum, someone has knowledge of or has seen a helmet like this. Any and all comments and opinions will be greatly appreciated. I need help with this one guys. Thanks, Jay

Because no one really knows, anything would be speculation. It's non regulation with a good chance of being period done. Could be late Volkstrum, Wehrmacht volunteer, HJ, non-textbook SA or Polizei or G.I/Landser inhanced. Items like these are allways a enigma.

            Police M16

            The first impression is nice.

              Jay,

These early helmets are not things that a lot of collectors know, or indeed are all that interested in. Therefore, not a lot old "common" knowledge and experience is out there. Personally, I like these helmets and the transitionals of the Wehrmacht and especially the SS. I only collect the black SS Allgemeine and VT helmets.

Your helmet is a between the wars (1920s/30s) reworked Austrian M16. The domed rivets are the big give-away. Although the Czechs also used these, so did the Austrians.

In my opinion, your helmet is an SA with the insignia of the Stabswache. I say this because in Ludwig Baer's earlier helmet reference (in mostly the German Language) titled "Die Gesichte Des Deutschen Stahlhelms" 1977, he depicts an exact example on page 187. It does not appear to be painted brown. Like yours, it looks like the original feldgrau colour. When painted brown the paint tended to chip off in a tell-tale manner. The pic in his book does not show that kind of wear.

              Anyway, here is the pic...

              Hope this helps.
