unknown black sidecap

got this sidecap today. It have a mixed design from WaffenSS and army. Can´t see signs of insignias. Can somebody help me out? I have no idea.

Hello madandi,

the cap you show has every chance of being original. It is made of "Nesselstoff" - a very low quality wool blend. I guess they used it due to a shortage of good quality wool or customed ordered for a reason that we do not understand today.

Here is a cap which was brought back by a New Zealand veteran in 1945 from an enagagement with 26 Pz.A.A. in Italy. Also pictured is a panzer wrap which another WAF member put up for sale on the estand.

Both items are made from this type of material. It is interesting that they are both for a panzer signal unit,

Hi Chris!
Nice fotos! i have no doubt that it is original, but im not sure if panzer, SS or something else. The sides look like Panzer, the front like SS. Look at the false paspel. A classic one!
My cap has no rivets.

Hello again madandi,

my cap came directly from the veteran who brought it back so they definitely made panzer items from that type of material. The grommets in my cap are non-standard and may have been added after it was made but during the war ???

I believe this is not some special material but ones that had "nap" on them 65+ years ago, nap that has since been digested by hungry insect larvae

No - I dont think so. I own a a salty wrap made in that wool (insignia restored) and I can assure you its not nap wear. This is a very low quality rough wool - I wouldnt want to wear it. I have seen at least 3 or 4 wraps in that wool - all of them were heavily worn.

Concerning the oversea hat I would try to find traces of insignia (UV-light??). Then you can perhaps discover what it was. My suggestion is indeed a panzer side cap.

Not a (Heer) panzer cap (imo). For one thing; no grommits. Possibly NSKK.

The question is: have you ever seen an unissued or lightly worn uniform made from this material? My opinion is still moth larvae.

This is never moth biten. Usement, ok, but no moths.

NSKK would have an RZM tag or signs of one having been sewn in the liner. The NS-Studentenbund and NS-Kinderschar had overseas style caps without insignia.
