    Reichszolldienst / Customs Insignia

Here are three items for viewing and comment.

    1. An NCO visor cockade - see below...
    and also here:
    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...hlight=customs

    2. A shoulder board, sew-in type with "RFV" cypher and one pip for the rank of "Zollassistant" (I believe);

    3. A collar tab with dull (lightly-soiled) silver, silky thread embroidered emblem and one pip missing (there clearly was a pip once on this tab) which would have made it equivalent to the rank indicated for the shoulder board above...perhaps? Could this have been for the Border Patrol Service?

All comments appreciated, for which I thank you in advance,

    John

      Hello John,

      Nice pieces.

The collar tab could have been used by the Border Patrol Service.

Usually the bright silver wire was used by the Custom's RFM personal, and the
dull silver used for the Border Protection personal. However, I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule.

I agree that there were exceptions to the rule here. I have a Zoll tunic with machine sewn dull collar tabs and sew-in bright shoulderboards that seems to have always been configured in that manner. I also see a mix of subdued and bright insignia on Polizei and Heer uniforms from time to time.

          NCO Visor Cockade

My thanks to Howard and Schupo for the comments on items 2 & 3!

For easier reference and comment on number 1 above, I am posting the cockade details and pictures here:

It is not made of aluminum, rather a heavier metal (not lead) that has a dull (not silver) finish and is non-magnetic. There are no maker marks. The detail of the acanthus wreath is quite good...note the metal is not voided in the small, diamond-shaped spot where the wreath comes together at the top, just above the roundel...

I would greatly appreciate it if any Forum members can comment, please, as to whether this appears to be an acceptable period original.

I don't see any red flags.

Looks like the typical late war zinc RFM cover insignia.

I'm with Howard. If that hat wreath is a fake then we are all in trouble!

                Cheers, Bill

Thanks, Howard and Bill, for your positive feedback. Never having had one of these zinc cockades before, I was not sure. Nice to learn something new in this hobby from fellow collectors every day.
                  Regards,
                  John

                      Nice Wreath . . . . .

Did anyone notice that the zinc Landzoll wreath is set up for a ventilated cockade, which would indicate it could have been for an Erel visor cap?
