It seems to be marked for Gendarmerie in 1938.

thank you for the hint, anmar.

now i know this is a german police canteen.
the stamp is the same as in this peaked cap liner-

i read the feldgendarmerie preceeded the feldgendarmerie in a military role, until Polish campaign, or thereabouts.

Gendarmerie is the rural police and was, as all police forces were, part of the SS. Not to be mistaken with Feldgendarmerie which is the military police which was a part of the Wehrmacht.

The rural police used brown leather for boots, belts, holsters, crash helmts and brown was part of their uniform. In that the brown straps on your field bottle make perfect sense!

The feldgendarmerie used all standard (army) equipment as we know it. I have never heard or seen of feldgendarmerie marked equipment. We do know police marked equipment but it is quite rare.

I say you have a nice gendarmerie marked piece! Not often seen!
