These eagles are found on some tan/water jump smocks dated from October through December 1944, but these are not the final eagle pattern.....

Well John, I guess Steve is on vacation...

In my opinion it is bases on the manufacturer of the smock. I certainly vote for eagles on a very thin cotton twill. They come in several variations; the extremely thin green cotton twill backed eagles with the subdued eagle, a trapezoid eagle with green (olive) twill or other thin cootn twill backings (gray, etc).

Here is a green subdued eagle on the extremely thin cotton twill. From a 12-44 dated smock.

And here is the late-war trapezoid eagle on olive cotton twill. This one was removed and has been trimmed. When encountered on a water pattern smock (have only seen 3 12-44 dated smocks with this eagle) it is larger and the edges are zig-zag stitched. I have only seen this exact color of backing on FJ smocks eagles, some collectors have used Luft tropical shirt eagles (trapezoid) to replace mssing eagles on some smocks. The olive one is not to be confused with a replaced tropical eagle.

Hi Willi,

I knew you knew Was hoping others might be interested in this also. Breast eagles really interest me. They are what I first obtained and collected as a kid.

IMO the triangular design was the final version, but as you said, at the war's end, it depended on what a particular maker had on hand.

Here is mine, removed from a smock. Don't you have a jump smock with this eagle still attached?

Yes, I still have that smock......12-44 dated, paper issue tag, zig-zag stitch on the trapezoid. Yours is very interesting with the straight line stitch.

Collecting eagles since childhood I sure am glad the sandbox is big enough for both of us.. .

I have brought this thread back from the dead.
I just picked one of these up at a show. Do you still believe it is a smock eagle ? I note there is an identical one in the new Kurtz book on Afrika Korps credited to G.P.
