    Norwegian collar tab

Isn´t that typical? Just as I have stopped collecting SS, this pops up.
Not long ago, I asked about the piping, here at the WAF, but got no good answer. Perhaps it´s Norwegian made? The lion is, that I know.
Stained, but I am pretty sure it´s not worn.

      Hi Ludwig
I always wanted one of these when I collected fv tabs.
I don't know about the piping either but I do like the look of the tab and lion.
      Cheers
      Dave

          Hi Ludwig

That type of piping is commonly found on reproductions- see these fake panzer tabs- your tab looks like one of these that has been aged and turned sideways for SS with new symbol added. Note also the same angled cut to the fold over on the shorter ends....

Indeed they look very similar! That´s very strange, as my "comes with a story" (that I have absolutely no reason to doubt), but it sure makes me wonder, so estand is now out of the question!

              Hi,

This link has some comments on the tab you have in question, you should expect to see a RZM tab with a added M 37 Norwegian lion:

              http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...hlight=DNL+tab

In addition some embroiled ones exits, but these are most likely local made and very rare.

Thanks, Pål! As you see, I have made some short comments there, even if it´s long time ago.
I can see that at least the lion is OK on my tab. What´s so strange, is that I got mine (for free!) from a vet´s family, and I can´t see any reason why – or when! – they should have obtained a fake? The vet did not serve in a Norwegian unit.

I have no opinion on the piping. The lion that you show Ludwig is the most common type of lions (its calledM07 in norway, not M37 which is much "slimmer") to be seen on DNL collar-patches that are in collections today, and the reason is most probably as mentioned before; there has been some quantity of these lions that has been possible to obtain loose because of use by other pre-war norwegian establishments. And some of these has most certainly been added to blank collar-patches etc. The most common lion to see on period photos is on the other hand a type of lion designed more or less exclusively for DNL.

These lions (made of zink) were notoriously known to brake, especially the head of the axe, and the tail of the lion were critical points and it can be observed on period photos that these parts is missing. On this photo one can see that the axe has broken and that the tail has started to come loose.

I believe Patrick W is correct about this kind of piping. It is very typical of old fakes and seems to no longer be used for the latest fakes. They have improved upon that.

A very educational thread, thank you Hilton on explaining the lion differences! I always thought it was one pre-war lion that the Legion and police units used. Comes to think about it - most Norwegian collar tabs I've seen that were offered - indeed had the M07 model.

P.S. How hard is it to find the M37 lion?

But beware: These lions must not be confused with NS police lions. They look the same but there are differences. Look at the lion`s knees:
