On February 1943 Karl Heinz decides that it was time for him to change and Decide to do something more thrilling than staying in flak and Luftwaffe reserve units so he joins an elite unit...the Paratroopers!
He probably knew that an FJ life was hard enough but i think that he felt he was mentally hard and prepared especially after he grown up without parents.
He goes in an FJ school in Braunschweig and then sent to train around Vannes in Bretagne..

From 1.8.43 al 31.3.44 in the Dresden FJ school he starts the training to become a real FJ and jump from planes!
In that period he is sent to Italy in Ostia and then during the Famous Italian 8 September he is in Rome to fight the Italian troops of Badoglio.
After that while still in Italy he sees the frontline for the first time in Roccasecca Near Cassino in december 1943 and then in Orsogna in january 1944!
This is a picture of some FJs in roccasecca near Cassino.

The allies finally land and the FJD3 Fallschirmjäger Division 3 starts marching toward the front,as the entry is shown in the wehrpass, where it will have bitter fightings.
One third of the division is motorized but the rest of the division has to march by foot or takin horses and donkeys from farms to march from the breton town of Guingamp to Avranches, about 200 KMs
