    My trip to Maleme, Crete...

Last month I was fortunate enough to visit Crete, and whilst there visited several places of interest to the military tourist with a view to posting them on my return. First up is the British & Commonwealth War Cemetery at Suda Bay.

We then travelled west toward Maleme, looking down on the British cemetery as we went.

A road sign indicating the German War Cemetery which is atop Hill 107, a main objective during the German invasion as it overlooked the airfield below, into which they hoped to pour reinforcements.

Inside the white building is information about the Battle for Crete, and the German War Grave Commission and the work that they do.

All of those buried are in marked graves, and all grave locations can be found in the register. Circled (not by me) is the entry for Gen Brauer, who was brought back and executed on the anniversary of the invasion.

The cemetry is beautifully maintained and very peaceful, a credit to the German War Graves Commission. I tried to imagine what it must have been like on 20th May 1941...

Each grave has a similar marker, and very few graves are unmarked.
