    Holler maker mark?

I listed a holler dagger on the estand and the marking is being questioned...Is this a proper Holler makers mark?

I've heard that eleven graduations on the thermometer was correct. Fakers usually don't put enough in.

        Andy,

Holler used both a thin and a thick style etched trade mark. The one you show is the thick style. No problem as far I can see.

          Nothing wrong with that one.
At Rathau on the Aller, the CO of 5th Royal Tanks advanced on foot to take a cautious look into the town before his tanks moved in. He encountered one of his own officers, a huge Welshman named John Gwilliam who later captained his country's rugby team, 'carrying a small German soldier by the scruff of his neck, not unlike a cat with a mouse.' The Colonel said: 'Why not shoot him?' Gwilliam replied in his mighty Welsh voice: 'Oh no, sir. Much too small.'

Since I was the one that brought attention to it, I am in the minority. I find that mark poorly executed no matter thick or thin.

Would like to see an example to support the other opinions. Here is mine again to support my position on the estand.

The dagger was removed for sale, did the dealer have a comment on it?

In case you missed mine I posted as reference on the estand, here it is.

Yes Andy - there is and I was surprised to see that some experienced folks liked this mark. This type mark goes back to the early Spanish repros I thought.
I know some dealers try to pass off "thick" mark ones as real, but any serious collector has to judge each on it's own merits. I am sorry, I have never seen a "thick" one come out of the woodwork. All originals I am aware of have 17 ticks on each side and are well executed. This one falls way short I am sorry to say.

I took the liberty of comparing the two maker's marks. Jeff's mark has 17 graduations on the thermometer compared to eleven. I have to admit that I had not heard about the thick and thin variations, but for me Jeff has the real McCoy.

I'll have to admit that I quoted eleven graduations from memory. I've since consulted some reference materials and I'm beginning to come around. I stand erected.

I believe the dagger to be good...it has Holler fittings ..look at the crossguard..and has the transitional Holler logo with 11 graduations of the thermometer, as found on their later transitional (maker mark to RZM mark) SA daggers...both types are perfectly acceptable... pic courtesy GDC

I still don't have a problem with it. To me both the dagger and the mark are correct. I have seen fake Holler marks before and this ain't it.

Thanks Kursk, but like I said each collector will have to judge Holler's on their merits. They are the most reproduced blades in the community. The one you show is 11 ticks (on a political blade) and again does not resemble at all the one posted.

To be fair I just looked and saw different other threads at GDcom that show 11 tick ones that got the "thumbs down". It's all what you are happy with. I personally would stick with 17.

Here is a thread to demonstrate what I am saying.

Andy - Did you contact the dealer you mentioned in the estand listing that sold you this? What was his opinion? I always keep an open mind on these things.
