Vince, the German police were known for their thrifty ways and usually continued wearing headgear and clothing until it wore out. Insignia changed with the period, but the caps could be worn by trainees and policemen in backwater stations. There is a famous photo of a police general (Siebert I believe) who was photographed in 1944 with SS-Police uniform and a 1934 police eagle on his visor cap.
Bill, looking in my files, the regulations governing that 1933 change in clothing for the Prussian police occured in April 1933. But the printed orders were lacking in substantial description. The visor cap was only described as more to the army cut and lower than the older Prussian visor cap. But a chin cord/leather chin strap was added along with side buttons. Funny thing is, the NCO buttons were described as white metal for the Schupo and yellow metal for the Landjagerei and Gemeindepolizei. A pip with Prussian colors (black/silver) was centered on the front hat band and a pip of the national colors was centered above on the front panel of the cap. Private purchase caps were permitted.
But the band and piping was not described. And it would not be until the new police eagle was adopted in the April a year later, that these caps would have had the eagle added. I never noticed, but the little chart I showed above is one of the few grafic representations of the new 1933 uniform, but with the addition of the 1934 eagle as that is visble on the cap.
Gerd, your collection is really marvelous.
