U-Boat badge, Deschler???

I am looking at this Uboat badge, it is in pretty darn good shape, is it a Deschler??

I noticed this one on John T.'s site today also. Although not a badge I've heard of before I did find several threads on them when I used the Advanced Search feature, typed in Deschler and searched just the KM forum. Here is one of several of interest...

Thanks, I did the same search, but was still looking to see if there have been anymore opinions since... I just emailed John, see what we can work out..

Hi Van basically it is down to the owner some believe in these awards others do not. Personally I cant comment as I have never handled one, however to my knowledge the belief in these are slowly growing does that make them original thou is still up for debate? All the best

Hi Van,

I saw that one too and was a bit surprised at the Deschler reference, haven't been up to speed on the latest research with Uboat badges. This one looks good and the reverse hardware does remind me of Deschler, specifically the hinge and pin. I had an EK1 with the same type of hinge and that distinctive pin. One thing that strikes odd with me is the very smooth interior edges of the badge, has a cast look to it rather than a die struck piece.

Hi Tom when ever I see photos of these that is what I always think, never look period to me but like I have said I have never handled one so could be wrong.

I think the Deschler reference has a tenuous thread upon which to grasp. I personally do not like the finish for a zinc period badge. Just too good. No real wear to the reverse, catch, hinge, nothing is worn, not a bubble under the finish to be found.

I was using a ten year old Sony Mavica that I was experimenting with for the pix on this one so they are slightly yellow, I can assure you it is die struck zinc with a nice finish which is not accurately reflected in the pictures. I will upload more pix taken with a newer camera on my site when I get a chance as I have been busy getting listing items.

I am definately not out to sell a fake U-Boat Badge on my site at www.germanwarbooty.com (in fact I probably eat 5 thousand dollars in repros that people stick me with on average a year) and my camera is probably the culprit regarding the pictures here....the badge finish does actually have more wear than the pictures which are "yellowed out" indicate...I have to get the white balance correct, but that will be re-medied when I get a chance to re-shoot the pix with the camera that I normally use. I have found the old mavica great for extreme close-ups but not that good for overall badge shots as it does not show wear to highlights...for example the contrast between the area of wear at the front of the U-Boat is not a correct representation at all and looks totally wrong. Sometimes I just get a lot of items in and I am in a hurry to list them and I can not spend too much item on photographing each item so an imperfect photo or photos will get by but I try to keep this to a minumium and I will re-do the pix of this badge, hopefully tonight as I update with more items.
