    Gau Danzig "Alter Kaempfer" Badge

    Hi Everyone,

    I have had this one in my possession for some years and would appreciate opinions.

    I believe it to be a genuine zinc example with plated finish. Hopefully, the photos show it but there is plenty of bubbling to the surface, as is typical of plated zinc badges.

    As to why the reverse is worn as it is, I am at a loss.

            Hi Stan,

            Many thanks for replying. My badge weighs 16.5g and measures approx. 36mm x 44mm.

            The tarnish has become somewhat darker in the time that I have owned it.

              IMO measurements and weight are correct for that style of badge. The pin is also textbook.

                  Hi,

                  these badges were given out in two versions. One is the official party version with a strong needle. The other one is a Veranstaltungsabzeichen, or Parte Meeting badge. They both have the same face but different needles and in some cases different metal.

                  This one looks like the Veranstaltungsabzeichen, the meeting badge.

                    I notice that you commented in the above thread Danziger, though perhaps you missed Warlord's comment about the zinc examples:

                    "I think Stan has put it very well. The Gau badges made in Danzig were from one maker and in silver. The zink pieces, I say this there are those made of other metal as far as one can tell are those made in Germany. These are not a DAY BADGE"

                    Can I ask if you (Danziger) have any proof, other than the statement in DN's price guide, that the zinc badges are, contrary to Warlord's assertion, meeting badges?

                      no, I don't have any evidence. I think it just comes down to a matter of opinions. The only fact is that there are two original versions, one in silver and one in zinc and the different needles/pins. As to what this means in terms of Day badge/Meeting badge or Party Decoration I cannot say.

                        Sorry to spill it over from Essen thread- makes more sense to post it here.
                        The badge as posted by Toby is a IMO a post war Souval badge.
                        To confuse matters even more- the Souval design badge has been copied by few reproduction professionals like totls.com etc fairly well but those typically use different type of pin plates (going on memory- totls badge used round plates for their pins, at least for their early stock). Those are made out of pot metal rather than zinc.

                        Since it was mentioned that Doehle referenced this type of badge in his book- no, it is not this badge. It is another type badge that to date has only been encountered unmarked but is thought to be by one of Berlin makers by some.
