Legionär - means legionary - type of rank for one of non-german volunteers..

        Aserb. Inf. Btl. 807
        Aserbaidschanische Infanterie Bataillon 807

Means - 807. Azerbaijan Infantry Batalion. On the middle of this Soldbuch You've got his name (that one hand-write). In frame You can see his current rank at the present date on left site corner.

On the next page You can see details about him. And on last picture, information about being in hospital-lazaret means.

        Best regards

              A little more info....

Page 1 shows he was promoted to deputy squad leader (stellv. Grupp.Fhr.) on 1.4.1943.

Page 2 has his personal details and description...he was a farmer.

Top fo page 15 has a security check on the Soldbuch dated 1.2.1943, the 6 remaining stamps confirm the Soldbuch was still valid and in order on those dates also.

Can you show more of the Soldbuch, and is there a photo of the holder?

              /Ian

Although Ian gave you the all-important organizational data from Tessin, here is a bit more detail that may be of interest:

                Aserb. Infanterie-Bataillon 807
Formed 7 December 1942 at Jedlnia training camp/16.2 km NE of Radom with a Stab and 1.-5.Kp. by renaming IV. Ausbildungs-Btl./Aserbeidschanische Legion (Btl. formed 22 July 1942 at Jedlnia).
27 Feb 43: formation and training completed, departed Poland for the East this date.
16 May – 6 Jun 43: participated with all 5 companies in Unternehmen Zigeunerbaron (Operation Gipsy Baron) and Freischütz (Fire at Will), anti-partisan operations against 6,000 partisans in the Bryansk area, that were necessary to clear the supply roads and rear area in preparation for the Kursk offensive in early July. Both of these operations included the notorious Kaminski Brigade that had a reputation for atrocities.
18 Sep 43: guarding the rail line in the vicinity of Klimovo/60 km ESE of Gomel.
1 Oct 43: now in the Rechitsa area to the west of Gomel under Pz.A.O.K. 2. The Btl. reported a strength of 700 officers and men, but 23 men deserted with their weapons this date.
15 Oct 43: ordered to assemble in the village of Kalinkovichi near Mozyr to prepare for transfer to France.
                19 Apr 44: re-designated IV.(aserbeidschanisches)/Gren.Rgt. 765 with Stab and 1.-4.Kp.
                1 Jul 44: near St.-Raphaël/south France manning beach defenses (as IV./Gren.Rgt. 765).
15-18 Aug 44: the U.S. 36th Infantry Div. landed at St.-Raphaël on 15 August and quickly overcame and routed enemy resistance. It was here that the Btl. was presumably destroyed, leaving only remnants to flee north toward Lyons and Grenoble with the shattered survivors of German 19. Armee.
23 Jan 45: its FpN formally deleted this date (this was a bureaucratic action taken months after the Btl. was actually destroyed and disbanded).
                FpN: 31290
                Kommandeur:
                Hptm. Welge (20 Dec 42 - ? )

XIII, p.10; N.Kannapin - Die deutsche Feldpostübersicht 1939-1945; Muñoz/Romanko – Hitler’s White Russians, pp.346, 350; G.Fischer – Soviet Opposition to Stalin, p.51; NARA WashDC: RG 242/T-312 roll 1311 frame 382; T-501 roll 81 frame 1361; roll 83 frame 065; roll 84 frame 331; roll 217 frame 399.]

In conclusion, the battalion was used mainly to guard the railway lines in Belorussia, except for the two anti-partisan operations in which it took part during May and June 1943. All of the main rail lines there had bunkers and log towers spaced along the tracks within eyesight of each other. The partisans would infiltrate at night and try to propagandaize the men into deserting. There were also frequent attacks and sabotage of the tracks. The morale of the Azerbaijani battalions was not high and that's why they were used as rear area guards and later transferred West.

Thanks, Polux, every contribution helps. Your man was traveling to St.-Raphaël to have some dental work done on his teeth.
