    Assman Panzer

    Knowing how much the forum members like panzer badges I thought I would put my tombac Assman up for inspection.
    This was one of the first pieces I ever bought.
    It measures 59.2mm x 41.3 mm and weighs in at 21.6 grams.
    It has had the pin replaced sometime in the past but apart from that is in almost mint condition.

          I thought some of the members would like my PAB, the original owner did as he had a profesional repair done on the pin.
          Also evident on the reverse of this badge is the lack of detail on the eagles chest just above the hinge.
          I was originally told that it was a die flaw characteristic of Assman PAB, however on clsoe examination it turns out to be the solder used to attach the hinge to the body of the badge. Some badges have it and others do not.

            Hi Peter,

            Your absolutely correct, this is a typical Assmann feature and surplus solder will be encountered on quite a few of these badges be it on early buntmetall or on zinc variants. Seems like Assmann never was in short supply of solder .

              Gorgeous badge...this is a very early assmann example...they also made these in zinc hollow version, that weigh in the 17- 18 gram range...i was very fortunate to recently get one of these. a keeper

                  Peter, that´s a nice looking badge .

                  Philippe, what about the third version, the light-weight hollow Assmann?
                  We had a discussion about a year ago, when Sergey and I posted ours.
                  What´s the conclusion on these; white-metal, aluminium or what?

                    Hi Peter,

                    My conclusion is still the same as back than. To me these badges are 2 layered Kupal constructions. A copper layer on top with aluminium underneath.

                    Here is a variant, it's a scratched Kupal Assmann Kai Winkler has for sale that clearly shows those two layers.

                      You have to excuse my ignorance, but cupal seems to be a tricky part
                      amongst a lot of people, including me. Am I to understand that the base-
                      metal is aluminium and the copper is the actual bronscolour?

                        Hi Peter,

                        No, these badges received a finish over the red/brown copper of the first layer. On some bronze examples this finish might show extensive wear or even be completely gone still leaving you with what looks like a nice bronze badge. In fact you can see the same effect on Kupal IAB's or GAB's
