    Alum. Assmann P/O

    I have considered this a repro for the last few years until I saw one remark about some original Assmann pilot badges having the large leg cutout. I’ve had this one since ’86 and the eagle is aluminum and the wreath appears zinc. It has the typical hinge and catch for a zinc wreath and it matches up rather well to a friends zinc Assmann observer.

    <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o></o>

    Can someone help me out with this one?

    <o></o>

    Thanks, Alan

      Sorry to say that it's a fake, known as the 'Fugly' = Fu***** Ugly.

      Here's an original, for comparison..

        Boy, I don't know Alan. I almost agree with your original assessment that the badge is a repro. I think we all agree that the Assmann Pilot and Pilot/ Observers had the oval cut-out between the legs. The badge you show looks more like the "wedgie" version. I'm sceptical, but may be wrong.

        Here is a similar version from Mike Tucker's Authentic Militaria site http://www.authenticmilitaria.com/default.htm, the Reproduction Alert section. The badge is not exactly the same, but the cut-out is very exaggerated.

        (I copied the images without permission, and will remove if requested)

          Here's yet another example of the same type of fake with a different, 'bogus', maker mark..

              Hi guys

              Do you remember there was a thread about pilot badge days before. I remember someone mentioned the "banana beak" is a sign of fake one. Hope it helps.

              best regards

              Indy
