Ubergrosse hand-finishing... is there ANY variation?

Does anyone have an Ubergrosse that ISN'T finished in exactly the same fashion as mine around the swaz?

    eg.

Nothing to the 2 o'clock Junction, slightly rounded at the 4 o'clock, and heavy right angle 'Juncker style' finishing at the 8 o'clock and 10 o'clock

Going through my box of Iron Cross 2nd Class, I found 5 of them. 2 are filed and 2are not filed, and one has the slightest filing on 10 oclock inner arm.

I do not use the words "hand finishing" but use the words poor workmanship. It is a lazy worker who grinds away material instead of properly positioning the pieces prior to the soldering of the frames.

Maybe they werent lazy and just had to expidite to get to the shelter before the next bomb fell, or were pressed by someone to work faster.Even with that finish they are nice.

mine is essentially a carbon copy of Biro's:
filed at the 4,8, and 10 frame joints.

BTW, what do i need to do to postjpeg's?

                  thanks,
                  joe

I certainly agree with Bob on this one - the Ubergrosse has to be one of the poorest examples of 3rd Reich workmanship.

There are many more examples like mine, where the inner corners are roughly removed to fit the swaz, the frames flare wildly from the centre out to the edges, and the date areas commonly exhibit pitting and bubbling where it appears the core was poorly cast.

It really is no wonder these so called RK prototypes were not considered up to scratch.

You'd certainly never catch a quality RK maker like Juncker hacking off bits of beading to make things fit!!

Look at the crosses that Biro, George and Joe owns. All three (3) have the same corners cut/grinded. One corner on all those crosses are untoutched. Why is that ?

                      Thanks.

                        Pete

That's what I'm trying to find out!

I have on file many more examples owned by members here with exactly the same finishing (see my post # 2) around the swaz.

I'm hoping to see if a pattern emerges about core placement within the frame, but we're a bit thin on the ground for examples so far.

                        Please, Uber-owners, POST AWAY!!

                        regards

Could it be that the swastika is offset on the core ?

                          Cheers.

                            Hello Marshall,

Are you implying that Juncker products are of quality workmanship? My observations of Juncker products are they are mediocre at best. They did excell in the very early days, but L/12 marked Knight's Crosses are nothing special, with filing and grinding to attempt to fit them. The average Juncker Luft badge is not on top of the scale of quality and finish.

Any time parts do not properly fit or a worker must grind away metal to correct misfitting parts, I would say the quality of either design or workmanship is of little importance to the company.

                              Hi Bob

                              No.....I was being facetious!!

I thought the smileys were enough of a clue...

My Lazy 2 has more inner beading filed OFF, than most EK's HAVE!!

Interesting though, when you consider the ease with which Juncker workers filed away the 'bits that didn't fit' around the swaz's on their RK's, and then take a look at the standard of finishing applied to many of the Ubergrosse out there which imply a similar work 'ethic'.

Not science, I know, but hey - if you don't speculate........

                              regards
